Internet of Things (IoT)

The network of connected, data-generating devices used by both consumers and companies in industries such as manufacturing and healthcare.

Added Perspectives

The Internet of Things (IoT) plays an essential role in the ongoing digitization of today’s world by bridging the gap between physical and virtual entities. IoT can thereby be defined as “a global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on existing and evolving interoperable information and communication technologies”

The Internet of Things promises to generate even higher-velocity data. For example, a utility company will receive thousands of events per second emanating from a regional grid of smart meters. A field of wind turbines can generate thousands of data points per second, some of which might tip off the turbine manufacturer that it has a maintenance issue. Unless organizations know how to query and analyze this streaming data on the fly or create alerts based on threshold conditions, they will never tap into its value before it’s too late.
