Semantic data layers are rapidly becoming an essential part of data management. This quote from Gartner makes a very strong statement: “By 2030, semantic layers will be viewed as critical infrastructure, right alongside your data platform and cybersecurity.” Data semantics have a key role in business-friendly data access, data integration, data interoperability, data enrichment, contextualization of AI data usage.

A semantic data layer is, first and foremost, an architectural construct—a design approach that supports representation, interpretation, and use of data with consistent meaning across systems and silos. Semantic layer design begins with semantic modeling—using ontologies and taxonomies to formalize meaning and establish shared terminology. Technical design applies four implementation patterns: a Metadata-Only Semantic Layer, a Graph-Based Semantic Layer, a Federation/Virtualization Semantic Layer, and an API-/Contract-Based Semantic Layer.

You’ll see how these patterns can stand alone or be combined in hybrid designs. We’ll also look at implementation of multiple semantic layers serving different purposes in a single data management architecture.
