Parkview Health Services, a behavioral health specialty pharmacy, grew from roughly five pharmacies to sixteen in two years. Some acquisitions brought a new pharmacy management system with them. Every system reported accurately about itself, on definitions set by the software rather than the business.  

Before the growth, the systems never had to agree with each other, because until each deal closed they never reported together. A date could mean written, filled, checked, shipped, or billed depending on which report produced it. A patient served by two Parkview pharmacies counted twice. Those are business questions before they are technical ones, and mapping the workflow was the only way to find out what had been getting measured. 

Parkview expects to keep acquiring for another three to five years, and the reporting layer is no longer the thing that decides how fast.
